I love Belgium. Not only do they have great waffles, but they’ve also produced some of the best fashion designers around at the moment like Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten, and Kris Van Assche. They understand the past, but also the importance of the future, making them an undeniable asset to the industry.
Like the love I’ve professed before for Hedi Slimane’s aesthetic, Kris Van Assche shares Hedi’s approach to menswear, although liking his models to have consumed more than the cigarettes, oxygen and coffee diet of Mr Slimane’s boys.
Of everything he designs, I lust for none more so than his hi-top trainers with their thick boot like soles, long laces that seem to go on for miles and the exposed zips running up the back of shoe. Which is odd because I can’t walk in them. Maybe it’s my thin feet or the inner leather being too slippery but somehow I end up walking like a pony trying to keep my feet from popping out… But I don’t care.
So if you want to dip your toe into the Kris Van Assche design pool and invest in something that might not be practical but looks great, then why not start with his trainers?
