After working in the fashion industry for 10 years, I’ve seen more than my fair share of sexualized campaigns (any and everything Tom Ford has ever produced) to last me a lifetime. But the the most offending factor is that they all seem to use the same message – ‘sex, now that I have your attention, look at my delightful products’.
Feeding off our basic human desires for romance, intimacy, love and even lust, the fashion industry daily bombards us with messages on how to achieve these feelings while on our personal pursuits of perfection. But perhaps the most aggressive in their messaging has to be the incredibly lucrative fragrance market. From fashion houses to celebrities, everyone knows how much money there is to be made in creating the perfect scent that will attract the desired sex.
And while nothing sells like sex, it can sometimes dance along a fine line and end up looking like porn such as the latest fragrance shoot in TVTOR magazine. Featuring Bo Roberts completely naked albeit for a bottle of Chanel, the muscle model looks more concerned with selling himself than selling some aftershave. I’m not sure who’s idea it was but the shoot simply makes no scents to me…
