When I look at the current state of fashion and the revolving door of designers constantly coming and going, I think Suzy Menkes put it best when she said ‘’We used to call this game of vacant thrones fashion’s “merry go round”. But now the vision is much darker. Who is next to be thrown into the lion’s den?’’. Fashion is fierce, a money game that lures creatives in to milk them of their talents and then toss them aside when they either physically or creatively burn out. The music has started up again and the designers are doing another lap of the chairs with Raf Simons having left Dior due to creative frustration, Alexander Wang departing Balenciaga for no reason, Alber Elbaz being pushed out of Lanvin and now rumours that Hedi Slimane is to be leaving Saint Laurent, the brand he controversially yet successfully rebranded and revived… But who knows when the music will stop and where they will land, but let’s hope that these true creatives survive what Menkes called the lion den, fashion needs them more than ever.
