Defining. Whether its gender, relationship, religion or dress code, we are obsessed with defining something and knowing what box to assign it to. In fashion, season after season we are obsessed with gender roles whether we are emphasising them or blurring them, we focus way too much time on what masculine and feminine is that I’ve not even sure why I’m writing about male model Jacey Elthalion’s latest shoot for GQ Thailand. Titled Breaker of Rules, I can only assume that the fact a very rugged and masculine male model is dressed in the season’s latest offerings of delicate lace, embroidered motifs, and sweet floral designs from Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Burberry is meant to be not just ground breaking but an actual story… When we are so adamant about breaking down walls, are we not just putting them straight back up by creating ‘stories’ around * shock, horror* a masculine man wearing feminine prints? Are we not defining stereotypical gender roles once again of what masculine and feminine should be? Why can’t we just talk about the good looking man and the amazing clothes?
