Nobody likes a try hard, that person that just goes above and beyond to look ridiculously organised, manicured or smart. Nothing about this kind of behaviour ever feels genuine or organic… Think back to school, it was always the kids who put in minimal effort that were always seen as the coolest. They just made things look like they fell together and not some elaborate construction. Which is exactly where fashion has been at the moment. Don’t get me wrong, I adore brands like Gucci that are all about a multi layered more is more look, but sometimes it’s nice to have a refresh – a cleanse of all the fuss… Which is probably why the new SS17 Dirk Bikkembers caught my eye. Stripped back, shot in black and white by Mel Bles, the campaign features male model David Trulik throughout showing equal amounts of skin and style in a crisp 90s Calvin Klein tone. It really does feel like a palette cleanse before the new season shows blind us with their elaborate and decorative bonanzas… Sometimes a minimal effort can just have the maximum effect.
