When Simon Porte Jacquemus presented his SS20 collection last June in the lavender fields of the South of France, he offered up a range not only inspired by but also shown on his home turf. Drawing on his childhood spent in a rural setting along the coast where he grew up, the collection weaved its way out of a sea of purple blooms and on to everyone’s wish lists thanks to his continuation of his brand’s identity with its relaxed and playful designs. And it’s not hard to see why I like so many others had to snap up styles from the collection when it was released this month, they are the perfect pieces to wear anytime but even more so on my annual pilgrimage to the south of France. I mean if Jacquemus went to all that effort of designing and presenting them in those sweet scented fields that seem to go on for miles and miles, then who am I to disagree and wear anything else… But sadly that isn’t meant to be as we currently find ourselves under quarantine, self isolating and locked away from the outside world in our homes where it is secure. No hot sun on my skin, no salted sea breezes and no views to be taken in with a glass of rose in hand… It’s a small price to pay for safety but worth it. So I’ll just have settle for one last stroll in a British Garden with my artichoke printed shirt before retreating to my own little world, my own home turf that once again I’ll have to rely on to inspire me more now than ever (albeit with a glass of rose in hand). In the meantime the South of France will just have to wait.
